Filters can provide structure, but they can also limit growth and stifle necessary change. Filters are inherently conservative, creating tests and barriers for new possibilities. Parents are a bit like filters, but experienced parents learn to change and adapt as part of the natural process of raising children. A parent learns that what a child needs at three isn’t the same as what he or she needs at seventeen. To parent well, you had better learn the difference.
