On Startup: Building a Product is Like Making Babies

Two main type of individuals in creating a product:

* Product / Idea Person

* Executioner

These can be 1 person, 2 individuals, or more.

If you talk in a programmer's language, it's the front-end and the back-end.

If you talk in a designer language, it's the designer (UI, UX, IXD, etc) and the coder.

If it's another kind of product like building a house, I dunno.

It's just not important you have these 2 kinds of individuals in a start-up team, it's important they sync. It's important their minds meet. It's important they can talk on the same language. It's important they can go down to the level of being intimate.

Having great minds for each of these roles will not matter if they cannot penetrate each other. Having a great egg and a great sperm are useless. You have to inject the sperm to the eggs to make something out of them. And, it's a plus if the meeting process is very good -- like blowing each other's minds during the f*ck -- because you will love the product more. And, if the outcome fails, you will still feel good to do it again and again and again.

(I got this thought from Eric Su's talk, when he said something to the effect that he and BJ (piclyf's lead developer) are soulmates -- they could marry each other.)

So before starting a start-up, make sure you can imagine yourself making babies with your partner.

Congress body to fast track national telehealth project

The National Telehealth Project, which was initiated by the University of the Philippines, Manila National Telehealth Center (UPM-NTC), is seen as an ideal partnership between healthcare and technology, which would enable doctors to remotely diagnose patients in rural and far-flung communities.

Remote consultations include the use of SMS and MMS services, video conferencing, and email referrals. The project has ten sites in four provinces, complete with workstations and training centers. In a 34 month period, there have 1,389 telehealth referrals from remote doctors.

According to the UPM-NTC, telemedicine also incorporates an e-records system which would develop a Web-based electronics health record system for government health centers and Phil-Health.

The collection of digital records also creates a centralized information system that can be utilized by PhilHealth. By keeping track of its members, PhilHealth can make it easier for members to get the health care they need and at the same time sustain their membership, as well as properly compensate health care workers.

Smart unveils Netphone priced at P5,000-7,000. Does this mean Android will become the leading mobile OS in Philippines?

Smart has teamed up with Chinese phone maker Huawei for the Netphone. The telco took part in the design of the handsets manufactured by Huawei to ensure that the devices are in accordance with Netphone specifications.

Making sure it will be affordable to many, the Netphones will retail for about P5,000 to P7,000.

Does this mean Android will become the leading mobile OS in the Philippines? Which means mobile developers wanting to catch the local market should go for Android then?

Smart move for Smart? It looks like they want the Apple's Appstore ecosystem success -- making money from the sales of apps and from the apps makers.

IBM’s ‘smarter planet’ agenda shapes up in PH, SEA

“Insurance companies are still reluctant to spend money on an area they don’t understand, which is technology,” Aguas said, noting that the insurance industry is spending only half of the investment of banks on technology.

He said insurance firms are not doing enough “customer analytics” that could reduce churn or attrition rate. “The Philippines has the second largest population in Southeast Asia, but the country is under-insured.”

“Social media is changing the game but the insurance industry is not using it,” Aguas said. “Everyone’s talking about the ability of social media to mine data but they don’t know about it.”

It's not only insurance companies who are reluctant, probably, all the different local industries.

Globe touts first voice blogging service in PH

Globe Telecom rolled out on Tuesday what it said is a pioneering technology that allows a subscriber to post voice updates using a mobile phone.

The Ayala-owned carrier said it partnered with Bubble Motion, a developer of consumer social communications services, to make the Globe Voice Blog available in the country.

Configured like a “voice-based Twitter”, the Globe Voice Blog allows social media fanatics to connect with each other, with a more personal twist, the company said.

Mindswitching

One of the things that will come handy when creating a product in a ‘start-up’ environment is to be able to switch your mind from one frame to another. There will be a lot of product changes in a short span of time, even before you are done writing the description of the previous/original product idea. Being able to ‘mindswitch’ from one frame to another frame instantly can keep you from feeling lost when your ideas are trashed one after another.

Thus, jumping from a very corporate world to a start-up can be stressful because corporate gives you a fixed set of tasks to work on.
