Getting across this kind of 'article' gets me to keep @tweetitow. There are times that I just want to get rid of @tweetitow. It's such a hassle of having to keep the system, the cost of it, of having to deal sometimes the complexities of the members in the community, and seeing Mark having to deal with this unnecessary 'stressor' sometimes.

But though no direct monetary benefit that comes out of it, the experience and the people I get to meet thru it make it worth the while. Can I say it somehow give me a ride in this mobile trend.

Net-by-text-message service could bring millions online in India | Technology | guardian.co.uk

HP Labs' SiteOnMobile allows access to the internet using only SMS text messages and voice commands – potentially opening it to India's 600 million users of mostly low-end mobile phones. By issuing commands to so-called TaskLets – the servers of which are based in the cloud – users can perform tasks such as checking the status of an order, requesting a quotation or booking a doctor's appointment.

30% of Dutch students twittert | Twitter Mania

30% of students in the Netherlands using Twitter. According to a survey of over 400 students  Studenten.net. This is Twitter with students as popular as  LinkedIn. By far the most popular social network among students is still  Hyves. 80% say it one account.  Facebook is following with 68%. Students spend a large part of the day by Internet. The majority is more than 5 hours online daily.

It's interesting to see that local social site dominates in a certain country instead of facebook. I wish we could have one local social site that will dominate also here in Philippines.

Is Industrial Age Thinking Crippling You?

The Industrial Age gave us a lot of bad legacies, and a couple of the worst are:

1)    Retirement

2)    Separation of Work and Play

We’ll deal with Work and Play in a later post.

Retirement.  What a dumb idea.  In 1889, Bismarck invented it to give German laborer’s hope that there was a carrot at the end of the stick.  He set retirement at age 70 when the average life expectancy was 42.5, and for those who made it to 20, they could hope to live all the way to 60.  In 1913 the U.S. institutionalized it at age 65, three years after the average age of death in the U.S. Hmmm… great – thanks.

This was actually only the natural evolution of an Age that asked us to give the best 8-12 hours of our day, the best six days of our week, and the best 40 years of our lives to do something that was many times not fulfilling and did not allow you to think, be creative, or express your humanity.  But if you worked hard, you could enjoy what’s left of your day, your week, and your life – AFTER we got the best of what you had to offer.

The Industrial Age worker bought it hook line and sinker, and as a result we have a whole nation of people who dream about “retirement”, which implies at least two things:

1)    Work is not fulfilling – it’s just a means to a future end a long way off.

2)    Significance and fulfillment is something you get AFTER you’ve worked really hard for decades.

Smart launches mobile Internet customer education program

“We want to make Internet services as pervasive and affordable as cellphone services. The penetration rate for mobile phones is currently estimated at 85 percent,” she said.

Sanchez also pointed out that Internet use benefits everyone — from the farmer who will be able to learn about new and more efficient ways of growing produce and selling them, to the student who will be able to access the same information as his peers in other countries, to the family members of an overseas Filipino who will be able to regularly communicate with them via social media.

Smart subscribers may surf from their Internet-capable mobile phones for only P10 every 30 minutes. Subscribers may also opt to go unlimited or “unli” via various mobile data plans such as Unlisurf 50 for unlimited surfing for one day for P50; Web Unli Plans for unlimited surfing in specific sites like Facebook, Twitter, Friendster and Multiply for P20 per day per site. Users may avail of the plans by going to http://m.smart.com.ph on their mobile phones.

I'm an SMS advocate. Though, it would be great to introduce internet but there are a lot of innovations that can be provided to the grassroots via a cheaper way, SMS. I hope they will also capitalized on that.

How Mobile Makers Make Dough? While TELCOS are going DOUGHnuts. And Developers have nuts and bolts. =)

Aside from making units,

Blackberry also earns from their BIS (Blackberry Internet Service). You know that thing which lets emails find you 'anywhere' in the world.

iPhone also earns from their AppStore, 30% from each application sold.

Nokia earns by making gazillion models of their mobile phones.

So if you compare Blackberry to Nokia, it has lesser variety of unit models because even if blackberry do not create new models, they still earn from their BIS. While for Nokia, they always have to release units every month to have sales.

So while different mobile companies are sweating out ways to get consumers to buy their products, the TELCOS are there sitting on their throne very fat getting rich from all the 'hardwork' of mobile companies. Because all mobile phones, from iPhone to Chinese shit will pass through them. If iPhone 4 fails, TELCOS will not lose any thing. And for blackberry, aside from charging you for your data use, they will also charge you for your BIS (in case of local TELCOS).

So how about the mobile developers? One of the 'revolutionary' thing about the AppStore is that it 'empowers' developers to develop mobile softwares and sell it 'directly' to users without having to go to TELCOS.  Because TELCOS do not really care about the pennies you earn from your apps because they are shitting gold from the voice/sms/data services. (Though, AppStore was not really the first for doing it because it's already possible to sell mobile apps with Nokia/Palm before appstore but it was Apple that popularizes the application ecosystem.)

Thus, you do not see much applications that are SMS/MMS-based because you need to go through the TELCOS for this. And, as I say and based from my own experience, it's not that sunshiny dealing with them. I'm not sure if it is how it still works, but TELCOS gets 80% for those 'text your artista/download your rington' services, and developers have a measly 20% plus the papers, and ass-kissing you need to do just to get them to work with you. So AppStore was like an oasis for the developers since developers no longer need to deal with 'telcos' just to get their applications to the hands of consumers.

But even with the positiveness of appstore to developers, I cannot help but felt that Apple is like just 'using' the developers to make money without having to only depend on sales of iPhone unit.s So like the BIS of blackberry, Apple is still earning from the Appstore even if sales on their units is low.

So while apple and android are like in a war with each other, and mobile developers have to bend to Jobs' rules and to Android's different versions of mobile units, TELCOS are enjoying the buffet.

And, the consumers? Hopefully, not the collateral damage.
